Are you coming to the end of your tenancy and your flat is looking like a herd of cows have just run through it? And to makes matters worst you can’t really be bothered cleaning up the mess yourself! If this is you then it is highly likely your flat will require a professional clean.

The majority of tenancy agreements require you to leave the property in the same state it was when you first occupied it. It is also becoming common that on the sale of a property it must be professionally cleaned before it is handed over to the new owners.

You probably think why don’t I clean myself and save a couple of hundred quid? Yes you could do this however you will most probably need to hire a steam cleaner for your carpets, window cleaning tools, plus purchase all the cleaning products you’ll need for the oven, fridge, bathroom and toilet. You still might save something in the back pocket but you’ll still have to put in the hours to ensure your house is cleaned to a professional standard. Ultimately, what is your time worth and does it actually meet the requirements of your tenancy agreement?

For those that are still sitting on the fence:

• A professional cleaning company will steam clean your carpets; getting out all that hair, dirt, food and everything else your hoover doesn’t pick up. They will go inside your oven and remove burnt food that’s been there since the first batch of muffins you baked, clean the inside of your windows to remove all the hand marks from your kids and clean the bathroom and toilets which we all hate doing!
• Professional cleaning companies offer a variety of options to professionally clean your house. You may want your house professionally cleaned but don’t want the carpets steam cleaned or you may only want the kitchen and bathrooms cleaned and not the rest of your house. Nearly all cleaning companies offer these options plus many more to fit you requirements.
• The majority of professional cleaning companies have two time slots each day. Either first thing in the morning starting at 8.00am or in the afternoon starting at 1.00pm. This works well if you are moving in the morning as the cleaners can come in after the removals company to ensure the property is spic and span for the new tenants.

A lot of removal companies tend to be pretty quiet over winter and can offer cheap removals in London. No one knows why but maybe it’s because people are busy skiing in France, too busy trying to keep warm or they just don’t want to move!  With this quiet period comes cheap removals in London with better rates. A lot of companies will offer discounts over winter. So if you are thinking about moving next year or in the next month have a think and see if your move date can be changed to December, January or February. You may be able to save a bit in your back pocket!

Cheap Storage

Now that the sunny 25 degree temperatures are over it might pay to have a think about the things you don’t need over winter. It’s not just cheap removals in London, but you can also get some good rates on storage. You might need to store things including BBQ’s, bikes (depending how brave you are!), summer clothes and camping equipment. Most houses and flats in London have very little storage space, so instead of cluttering up your house why not put these things into storage for a few months? Depending how much you have, most storage facilities offer units from as small as 10ft2 which can fit approximately five medium size suitcases or boxes. These cost around £25.00 a month.

This time of year is also a good time to get those things you stored for the summer months out of storage. This includes jackets, coats and ski/snowboard equipment. The end of tenancy clean is one of the main things you need to ensure if you are moving out of rented accommodation, or even just moving home, the end of tenancy clean is one of the things that is often left to the last minute and organising the cleaners. If you are moving from rented accommodation most tenancy agreements stipulate you are required to have the property professionally cleaned with an end of tenancy clean, and you definitely want to make sure you get your bond back!

At Kiwi we recommend that for any end of tenancy clean you use a reputable company, because let’s face it, cheap and cheerful isn’t always the best option when you have a substantial amount of money at stake with a rental bond. So what is the best option then for an end of tenancy clean? There are two options that we recommend, getting either a light clean or a general clean. The light clean covers all the surfaces, walls etc, while a general clean will include all of these plus steam cleaning of carpets, oven de-grease and curtains. Typically we recommend the general clean, as most people simply do not have the time to do the work themselves, and moving is stressful enough. If you do have the time though, why not get the gloves on and get stuck in doing the work yourself. You can hire carpet cleaning machines very easily and elbow grease is free! If you are unhappy with any aspects of your clean, a reputable company that you use for the end of tenancy clean should fix any problem areas for you free of charge. 

Ultimately your decision on which cleaning service to use for the end of tenancy clean will depend on your budget and the time you have available. Just be careful though because if you do take a few shortcuts and the landlord or management company are unhappy, you may end up facing a far larger bill than the cost of a end of tenancy clean with deductions from your rental bond
